Great racing this weekend

We have some great National Hunt racing to look forward to over the next few days with the declarations ensuring that this an even better weekend than usual.

This is as much a reminder for me as anything so here goes:

Friday

Wetherby

14:05 Ahoy Senior (10/11) (one of the best horses Lucinda Russell has had for a while)

15:15 Porticello (11/8) (Gary Moore top prospect); Too Friendly (100/30); Sacre Pierre (6/1)

15:50 Magic Saint (9/2); Good Boy Bobby (11/4)

16:25 Larch Hill (9/2)

Uttoxeter

14:48 Flic Ou Voyou (9/4) (chasing debut for Nicholls)

Down Royal

13:10 Hollow Games (1/4) (a Ballymore prospect for G Elliott)

13:45 Party Central (13/8) (another top prospect for Eliott)

14:20 Zanahiyr (4/9) (leading Cheltenham candidate last season and potentially more to come – really should win this)

16:05 Arahecan (is the RP nap at 10/1)

16:35 The Mediator (5/6) (unraced for G Elliott)

Saturday

Down Royal

13:05 Fil Dor (debut for G Elliott – watch the market)

13:40 Mighty Potter (yet another interesting debutant for Elliott)

14:15 Charli Parcs (20/1) (not expecting anything from him (now with Aidan Howard) but may improve on 5th last time out). Hearts Are Trumps (22/1) is another who has lost his way but might just run into a place.

14:50 I favour a fresh Frodon (9/2) over Gold Cup winner Minella Indo (evens) at this early stage in the season.

15:25 Envoi Allen (4/11) should win this easily.

Wetherby

13:20 Gericault Rouge (7/2) a likely improver

13:55 Molly Ollys Wishes (100/30) is a confident selection and could have an exciting season ahead.

14:20 Paisley Park (9/4); Thomas Darby (7/2); Master Tommytucker (5/1 and interesting over hurdles). Take your pick.

15:05 Cyrname (6/5) on a redemption mission; Shan Blue (5/1); Fusil Raffles (13/2) my selection

Ascot

14:10 Boothill (7/2) an unbeaten and potentially exciting prospect

14:45 Editeur Du Gite (100/30) won the Red Rum and was followed home by Sully D’oc AA (6/1). A forecast for a repeat?

15:20 Vinndication (3/1) one to watch

Sunday

We await the declarations but races of interest include:

Carlisle 14:00 Chantry House, Fiddlerontheroof, Sporting John

Cork 14:25 Beacon Edge, Bleu Berry, Diol Ker, Run Wild Fred

Cork 15:00 Eleazar Des Neiges, Agent Boru

Overall, we’ll know a lot more after the weekend but it’s worth bearing in mind that, in Ireland, the Down Royal meeting tends to be a benefit for Gordon Elliott, particularly for debutants or near-debutants and WP tends to avoid it. My most interesting candidates?

Ahoy Senior

Porticello

Flic Ou Voyou

Hollow Games

Frodon

Envoi Allen

Molly Ollys Wishes

Fusil Raffles

Boothill

Chantry House

What a treat in prospect! Just for fun, a 9 fold on the Friday and Saturday selections would deliver a 10,000/1 return. Yes, of course I’ve done it! Much better odds than the Lottery.

I’ve also done:

Ahoy Senior, Porticello, Flic Ou Voyou, Hollow Games, Frodon, Envoi Allen and Fusil Raffles accumulator at 679/1

Ahoy Senior, Porticello, Hollow Games, Frodon, Envoi Allen and Fusil Raffles accumulator at 226/1

Ahoy Senior, Porticello, Frodon and Envoi Allen as a Lucky 15 for a potential return of £117.49.

Let’s hope that the first two at Wetherby on Friday deliver.

Good luck!

The end of the Cheltenham preamble

The coming weekend entries have turned up what could be some proper clues for the  forthcoming festivals, including the potential return of Douvan.

What a weekend in prospect!

Boxing

Thank goodness decent boxing is back after the Christmas break. Although I think that, just on balance, Eubank Jr is likely to win, Groves is far too long at 17/11. On 3 March Deontay Wilder is ridiculously good value at 4/7. Ortiz is a slow lump who is massively overrated and the powers that be will not tolerate a drugs cheat as WBC champion, let alone disturbing the road to Joshua/Wilder. On 5 May Bomber Bellew is another great bet at 2/1 against Haye (7/15).

Weekend selections – 25/26 November

After last weekend’s very pleasing four from five selections (no favourites when selected) on Saturday and the fifth lost to a 25/1 winner, plus (admittedly more favoured) Fox Norton, Slate House and Faugheen on Sunday, here we go again. Not expecting that I can simply repeat with night before selections, you can see from the earlier posts that I selected entries of interest over the last couple of days so that there is a measured (and not market dependent) process applied.

The ground is hugely important this weekend. I’m typing this (Friday at 7.15 p.m.) as I can hear heavy rain with a hint of hail on the Wirral, not that far from Haydock. As aficionados know, there are three main UK racecourses that have a tendency to produce knackering ground – Haydock, Chepstow and Doncaster (others include Sedgefield). I’ve resisted checking the penetrometer ratings because I don’t need to know what happened 24/48 hours ago.  I suspect that once we get going tomorrow there may be numerous non-runners at Haydock, particularly because the chase course is scheduled to take a bit of a hammering. Good luck Kirkland Tellwright (clerk of the course) who’s had a bit of a chequered history.

Saturday

Gowran (heavy)

12:05 3-y-o Maiden Hurdle 2m

Kuraka*****. Selected when 1/2 and now 2/5.

12:35 Maiden Hurdle (5-y-o +) 2m

Carter McKay (13/8) was the entry selection but I think that MinellaforDollars* (5/4) might win.

13:10 Novice Hurdle (4-y-o) 2m

Sharjah*** (5/4) will win. Chosen with the entries and happy to stay there.

14:20 Intermediate Conditions Chase 2m 4f

This had proper runners but its now all about Min*****, now 1/8. Hey ho!

14:55 Beginners’ Chase 2m 4f

Battleford, C’est Jersey, Monbeg Notorious were the early choices and only the latter makes it to the decs. That’s no problem with me – can’t have Tin Soldier at 8/13! Go with Monbeg at 9/4 (now 6/4).

Haydock (heavy, soft in places on the hurdles course)

12:10 Listed Novices’ Hurdle 2m

Ainchea, Claimantakinforgan, Dynamite Dollars, Whatmore were the notable entries. From them, just Dynamite Dollars**** makes it to the race. Another short odds selection (15/8) but justifiably so.

12:40 Handicap Chase 3m 4 1/2f

Russe Blanc (7/2), Emperor’s Choice (5/1). Both selected on Wednesday. Both are heavy ground specialists and will relish the (attritional) marathon trip.

13:15 Graduation Chase 2m 5 1/2f

I fancy Clan des Obeaux** (4/1) to prevail against a decent field.

13:50 Handicap Hurdle 2m 3f

I’m with Value at Risk* for a small interest at 15/2

14:25 Stayers’ Handicap Hurdle (Grade 3) 2m 7f

The Worlds End and shortening Champers On Ice properly head the market. One to watch

15:00 Betfair Chase (Grade 1) 3m 1 1/2f

Former Peter Marsh winner Bristol de Mai*** will never have better conditions and should add this Grade 1 at 7/4.

Ascot (good to soft)

14:05 Christy 1965 Chase (Grade 2) 2m 5f

Smad Place, Frodon and Top Notch have all stood their ground. Would love to see Smad Place win but my interest will be Frodon* at 14/1 e/w.

14:40 Coral Hurdle (Grade 2) 2m 3f

A great race for a small field and I fancy Defi du Seuil to give way to Lil Rockerfeller** (3/1).

15:15 Handicap Chase 2m 1f

A shame that Speredek is not running but my bet of the day is the excellent San Benedeto**** at an appealing 100/30.

Sunday selections to follow. Good luck!

Sunday

Navan (heavy)

13:05 Monksfield Novice Hurdle (Grade 3) 2m 4f

Samcro

14:05 Beginners’ Chase 2m 1f

Montalbano

14:35 Troytown Chase (Grade B) 3m

Acapella Bourgeois, Childrens List

15:05 Handicap Hurdle (Grade B) 2m 6 1/2f

Mon Lino, Folsom Blue

Royal Ascot – Friday

So close with Tuesday’s treble and, undeterred, here we go again, focusing on the short odds, likely winners of the day.

2.30 Albany Stakes

Alpha Centauri (11/4)

3.40 Commonwealth Cup

Caravaggio (10/11)

4.20 Coronation Stakes

Winter (1/2)

If successful, a £10 treble will return £107.39.

Good luck!

Ascot – Thursday

There’s only one race of interest to me tomorrow and that’s the Gold Cup (4.20).

I was ready to talk up Order of St George but the odds (evens) are unattractive.   There are two others of note, Big Orange and Simple Verse (both 8/1) and both with realistic chances.

I’m going to wait and see what tomorrow’s market brings. I think that I’d need to see at least 5/4 before being tempted.

Royal Ascot

What a frustrating day! The bet options were 1 and 2 (double) and 1, 2 and 3 (treble). 1 and 3 won and 2 was the 4/6 hotpot. Oh well.

No selections tomorrow (Wednesday). I’ll be back for Thursday and all over Order of St George.

Royal Ascot – Tuesday

Regular readers will know that I am no fan of flat racing and, in particular, Royal Ascot. However, it is worthy of attention because the very best are on display and trained for it so betting options are therefore more reliable. So, here are my (very short odds and favourite) selections.

2.30 Queen Anne Stakes 1m straight

There is absolutely no reason to oppose Ribchester***** so the evens is very appealing. It’s not so much that this one is probably the best miler in Europe but more that in this race he has only one proper opponent in the shape of Lightning Spear, who he comfortably beat last time out. Double your money!

4.20 St James’s Palace Stakes 7 1/2 f round

It’s the same formula here, only more so with Churchill***** at 4/6 and Barney Roy (9/4), 10/1 bar. They were 1-2 in the Guineas but the market favourite is going for his eighth consecutive win and conditions should suit. Make no mistake, these two are way ahead of the opposition.

5.00 Ascot Stakes 2m 3 1/2 f

Now we’re talking! The top three in the market, Thomas Hobson** (9/2), Who Dares Wins (6/1) and Beyond Conceit (8/1)  are trained by Willie Mullins, Alan King and Nicky Henderson respectively. Thomas Hobson and Beyond Conceit have not been seen on the flat since 2013 but the former looks ideally placed in this and the jockey booking (Ryan Moore) is significant.

Summary

So, what to do? A £10 double on Ribchester and Churchill returns £33.33, while a treble on those two plus Thomas Hobson returns £183.33. Both bets placed.

Not very imaginative but Royal Ascot is all about picking the class horses.

Good luck!

Weekend thoughts

Well I think that I need to take stock after last weekend’s events. My little home office has been improved immensely by a push and spin ashtray (reminiscent of my grandfather) while I’m pottering around the racing news! Family will no doubt remember the floor based spin ashtray in the lounge in Belgrave Street! Les introduced me to racing.

Some of my Cheltenham picks have definitively reinforced their claims and others have bombed out. Might Bite and Politilogue did what was was expected of them and Cue Card has been scratched from the Ryanair (bad move). Bristol De Mai ran a race that was too bad to be true and I’ve not given up on him. Altior was spectacular but any value has gone. Jezki is now all the rage for the Stayers’ Hurdle and that makes complete sense.

Sunday at Leopardstown was even more interesting. Mega Fortune was very impressive and Bapaume and Meri Devie are not going to win at Cheltenham. Bacardys was a thrilling winner and the advised 33/1 is still an attractive 16/1 for the Supreme. Disko was very impressive the 2m 5f novices’ chase and Our Duke is one to note. Bellshill bombed out in the style of a horse that you cannot follow next time.

What to make of the Irish Gold Cup? It’s a Grade 1 but, let’s say it, it’s not really the Irish equivalent of the Cheltenham highlight. So, Sizing John beat Empire Of Dirt and Don Poli. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the race was that More Of That ran so well. I think that the winner has won his first race at the correct distance for him but I don’t think that this is relevant for the March highlight. The winner of the Cheltenham Gold Cup was not in this race.

Foxrock won the Hunters’ Chase well but I agree with the word from the Walsh’s that the best target for him is Aintree. This was the best prep that On The Fringe has had for years and I’m very keen on him for Cheltenham. He’s obviously up to his best. Notable that the Racing Post summary reported a “hands and heels run-in, kept on well”.

So, on to today (or tomorrow if you’re very keen!). I’m being picky because, as I pointed out last weekend, most of the Cheltenham candidates have now had their outings.

Ascot

1.15 2m 3f Novices’ Hurdle Celebrated

I’ve already made clear my like for Topofthegame****, a huge horse and a confident choice at 3/1, notwithstanding an unbeaten opponent, De Dollar Man (8/1). We all know that this one is a chaser in the making but he should have the measure of these, including the Nicky Henderson favourite. Well there’s a big call to shape the day!

1.50 2m 7f Novices’ Chase

I’m a big fan of Arpege D’Alene*** and recent form makes the current 2/1 very attractive. Time for Paul Nicholls to emerge from his January slumber and start with his Saturday winners.

3.35 2m 5f Ascot Chase (Grade 1)

This is the right distance for Cue Card*****, who will win this with loads in hand at a current 1/2. Someone who tends to do a lot better than me thinks that Taquin du Seuil will do better at the shorter distance and I can’t disagree with that so the 13/2 looks good. As I pointed out above I’m unhappy that Cue Card has been been scratched from the Ryanair.

Gowran

Ballycasey*** should win the Red Mills Chase (Grade 2) and Jezki**** should win the (Grade 3) Red Mills Hurdle. Both make sense for multiples.

Haydock

Without trying to be too local, I’m always interested in Haydock jumps meetings, notwithstanding the destruction of the chase course, not least because runners in the decent races tend to do well. There’s a reason why Nicholls and Henderson run their horses there and I think it’s because it’s a level track similar to Newbury, but the downside is that Newbury and Haydock runners won’t translate to Cheltenham winners. However, they are often serious candidates for Aintree. So, on to Saturdays’ races.

1.30 Victor Ludorum 2m

The name suggests that this should be a proper test. The reality is that it isn’t. Most Celebrated is the favourite but this is one to avoid for me.

2.05 Rendlesham Hurdle 2m 6 1/2f  (Grade 2)

I think that Agrapart** (2/1 jf) should win this one. Aux Petit Soins is a good opponent but you have to make a choice!

After Call To Order qualifies for the Pertemps we can then move on to what is called and this time deserves to be the Grand National Trial:

3.15 Grand National Trial 3m 4f and a bit (Grade 3)

Called a trial, this is a £75,000 race worth winning win its own right.

Although a great race in its own right, I suspect that it will deliver the winner of the big race in the shape of Blaklion (9/2) or Vieux Lion Rouge (7/1). Neither needs to win tomorrow/today but if they run well they should be considered for the big one. I think that you can discount the Irish contingent.

As always, good luck!

Weekend preview (bet on Ryan to go)

cue-cardNow we’re settling in to decent weekend jump racing and the first proper race is the Charlie Hall Chase, in memory of the trainer.

Back in the day this was the first NH weekend when it was necessary to switch between channels between C4 and the BBC, for what was the United House Gold Cup Chase at Ascot, with Richard Pitman and co providing no more than average coverage, not his fault but the beginning of the BBC’s withdrawal from racing.

The big issue with National Hunt racing at the moment is finding good jumping ground. Wetherby is good, Ascot is good, and we could do with at least good to soft. Nonetheless, we have some decent races tomorrow and I’m being a bit picky so here are my limited selections.

Wetherby

15:20 Charlie Hall Chase (Grade 2)

Cue Card is one of my favourite horses and has tended to start well (Haldon Chase at Exeter and won this last year) but 4/5 is too short against Blaklion* who should like this flat track and appeals at 7/1.

Ascot

15:35 Sodexo Gold Cup Chase (Grade 3)

I’m all against current favourite Saphir du Rheu (3/1) and all in favour of Tea For Two** (at an appealing 5/1). The latter will fall short in the big races to follow but this is a gift with the rest of the field far below what will follow.

Save for the Byrne Group Handicap Chase, where I don’t have a particular view (Yorkist probable winner but no bet), I don’t know enough about the others which is why I’m not straying beyond the main races.

TV Competitions

This is a far more interesting market – no ground issues!

Strictly

Bet on anyone against Ed Balls! This is another Anne Widdecombe scenario! This has gone way beyond the programme and there is an Ed Balls following that is going to see him at least to Blackpool.

Anastacia is 6/4 to go next, but my preference is Laura Whitmore at 100/30 (Ladbrokes) 4/1 (Coral) – excellent value.

I’m loving this market. Danny Mac is roughly evens and will not win because he has no “journey” and BBC voters require a journey. I remain of the view that Ore is not well enough known so he will not carry the heavy vote when we approach Christmas. The ones who will are Louise (7/1) or Claudia (9/1) and, as such, they are incredible value. Get on now because the odds will shorten after this weekend!

X Factor

I reiterate that Matt (4/6) will not win the X Factor. I don’t know who will but it won’t be him! It’s 5/1 bar so take your pick.

Ryan is just not very good and should go this weekend. 3/1 for him to go this weekend is good value – he’s a rubbish singer.

I love Saara Aalto who is 7/4 to go this weekend. Maybe I’m being a little biased towards a good singer (see my previous post) but I think she’ll survive for now.

The other voting angle is that groups don’t generally do well. That puts 4 of Diamonds in the mix so they are at risk. On merit they should survive but the story that Sony put them together before the competition could be their downfall.

Good luck!

Haydock selections 23 January

haydock-parkThis weekend’s highlights are the obvious showdown at Ascot in the Clarence House and probably the best card of the weekend in Ireland tomorrow. Nonetheless Haydock tomorrow is where I’ll be and very much looking forward to it.

1.00 Haydock 2m6f Hurdle

I have an affection for Horizontal Speed * (11/2) because he shares the same sire as Quatre Heures. He’s gone close recently and if the ground isn’t too bad this return to hurdles might be just right. However the progressive Baywing (5/2) may be just too good.

1.30 Haydock 2m3f Novices’ Chase

Bristol de Mai *** (2/1) opened far too big at 7/2 and should win this. Otago Trail has good form on heavy and if the first race is slower than expected should be respected.

2.05 Haydock 1m7f Novices’ Hurdle (Grade 2)

This is completely misnamed as a Supreme trial. Nonetheless it’s an interesting race. Le Prezien **** (10/11) is the standout here at a very fair price. I also fancy Vieux Lille (7/2) in a forecast.

2.40 Haydock 1m7f Hurdle (Grade 2)

It’s probably folly to oppose The New One *** (4/9), winner of this last year on the same ground. However, I can’t believe that he’s getting any better and should surely be exposed to a progressive type. So is there one in the field? The short answer is “no”! I really wanted to find a horse to oppose him but can’t find one. Captain Conan is back after a long absence. Melodic Rendezvous has been campaigned well but surely his best days are behind him. I was near to backing Fou Et Sage but he hasn’t exactly delivered since moving from France and the others are there to make up the numbers.

3.15 Haydock 3m Chase (Grade 2)

It’s pleasing to see that the Peter Marsh Chase has retained its properly named place as an important race in the NH calendar. I think that the decision to put Reve de Sivola **** (7/2) back over fences off a good mark (10st 4lb) on heavy ground at Haydock is inspired and should pay off. Fingal Bay is OK on heavy ground and Virak has Haydock form but I think that the favourite is superb value. I cannot have Algernon Pazham at any price (tipped elsewhere).

3.50 Haydock 2m Handicap Chase

It’s hard to get excited about this one and I can’t make a case against the current joint favourite and highest rated Morning Royalty * (3/1), second over a slightly shorter distance and with the same ground and official rating here on 30 December. Not an obvious bet.

4.20 Haydock 2m2f Novices’ Hurdle

Similar to the last race but I’m slightly more positive about another current favourite, Vintage Clouds ** (5/4), a progressive Trevor Hemmings horse, second here last time over two miles and a winner here in his last but one over today’s distance.

I can’t sign off without a view about the big one at Ascot.

3.00 Ascot 2m Clarence House Chase

Un de Sceaux ***** (8/15) is the Moscow Flyer of the current age. Wins imperiously or falls and in my opinion of an equivalent standard. Current form going into this race is 1111F including the Irish Arkle, the Arkle and the Punchestown Ryanair. A star of our time and should be 1/3.

So, in summary, the Lucky 15 is taken from the highlighted races and is:

Haydock 1.30 Bristol de Mai

Haydock 2.05 Le Prezien

Haydock 3.15 Reve de Sivola

Ascot 3.00 Un de Sceaux

A £2.00 line (stake £30.00) for a potential return of £322.27.

Good luck!
